Inspiration Destination: Must-See Banksy Street Art Around The World

02/10/2020

When I saw this Far & Wide Banksy article (https://www.farandwide.com/s/banksy-street-art-70215d66dea54b9e), it inspired me to go back to the archives and dig up unshared photos from my own trip to New Orleans, Louisiana, early last year. (Thank you, Far & Wide)

Nola aka Umbrella Girl or Rain Girl was such a memorable part of our visit that I can vividly remember the weather, our guide and the impact she had on my day. At this moment, you can still find her on the corner of N. Rampart and Kerelec in the Marigny neighborhood. Banksy (the best-known street artist in the world) created her in 2008, 3 years after Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans, as one in a series of 14 he did around the city. Only this one now remains. The rest have either been destroyed, stolen or placed in museums and galleries.

The irony of the rain falling from the underneath the umbrella’s canopy still effectively illustrates the horrible dome memories of Katrina.

Naturally, she’s worth more than the building she’s painted on. Thankfully, it’s now covered in plexiglass to provide some security against combative street artists painting over it. It has had its share of graffiti, has suffered some and is less intact than you’d hoped, but she still stands.

If you’re in the neighborhood or looking for something special to do in New Orleans, I would recommend the New Orleans Street Art & Mural Walk. It was one of the first AirBnB experiences we tried; we loved it. https://www.airbnb.com/experiences/336109
