MKE’s Street Art, Gallery Night
07/09/2018Looking for art inspiration without spending a dime? Brew City holds an incredible art scene on the streets, and the amount of open artwork has been growing within the last few years. Here are some of my favorite MKE Street Art examples:
Black Cat Alley
This gallery walkway is a must-see. Milwaukee’s East Side is home to over 30,000 square feet of large murals in an open walkway located between Kenilworth Place and Ivanhoe Place. Considered one of Milwaukee’s newest tourist destinations, it has already attracted visitors from all over the world.
Black Cat Alley was brought to the public during the Doors Open Milwaukee event in September 2016. It was created by eleven different artists, both local and international. The artists took only two weeks to execute the murals, but the entire project took more than two years to organize. The murals reflect strong messages of diverse issues in a variety of mediums.
Milwaukee Mural Map
A few weeks ago, I was curious to see if I could find art around the streets of Milwaukee that I wasn’t aware of. After doing a little research, I stumbled across this site. It turned out to be a perfect guide, providing pins of each mural marked onto a map of Milwaukee. There are labels of what each type of murals is, along with photos and information about each piece. Every mural seems to be thought provoking in their own way. This site is now my go-to, and I highly recommend it for those who aren’t afraid of a little adventure!
Have Goals
Mural art is not the only form of street art Milwaukee holds! If you drive around Milwaukee with your eyes peeled, it may not take you long to find a “HAVE GOALS” sticker placed on a light post at an intersection or on the side of a newspaper stand. The message can be perceived in many different angles (literally) by viewers.
In 2011, the artist of this sticker started a Have Goals, Milwaukee art project supporting youth programs such as TRUE Skool Inc. The artist of the sticker is unrevealed, but he has opened up to radio Milwaukee about his powerful message.
